A few things I’ve learned about running injuries

How was your day?

I had a good day.  Apparently I was busy because the only pictures I found on my phone are of my current obsession.

Simply raspberry lemonade with Trader Joe’s very cherry frozen fruit.  Best when eaten with a spoon.  Just sayin’

And the track lighting Mike fixed.

I didn’t mention it on the blog, but after my race on Saturday the inside of my left ankle/leg felt like someone kicked it with steal toe boots.  Okay I might have been a little dramatic, but dang it hurt.  I took a few days off and it’s feeling so much better.

But a few things I’ve learned about dealing with the running injury punks, is that catching it early and preventing them from becoming a major ‘I can’t run, my life is going to end’ meltdown is key.  Also most {of my} injuries pop up because of muscle weakness.

I knew there was a weak link causing pain, I’m just not trained to figure it out which one(s).

So I went to see my PT ninja Jeff this morning to put my mind at ease and figure out which muscle I need strengthen.

I’m so happy I have a great relationship with him, I swear he’s my lifesaver.  Sometimes I feel like I’m overdramatic but he assures me I’m doing the right thing.  Bonus points for him putting up with me.

Anyway I think he said the hills overworked the tibialia anterior.  Or some other technical word smart people use.

After a {painful} deep tissue massage, he gave me 2 new exercises & stretches to do.

I’m going to run tomorrow and see how things go from there.

Whew.  Crisis averted.

How do you determine if your dealing with normal ache’s & pains or if it’s something more serious?

If it’s new and comes & goes, I make a mental note and see how it feels after a few training runs.  Along with lots of stretching.  When in doubt, I call my PT ninja.

Do you strength train?  Do you enjoy it or do it because you have to?

I’m working on being a lot more consistent.  Why can’t I just run!?!?

Did you have a shin splint? If so, please tell me the exercises he gave you as I have a stubborn one that won’t go away and I have to start training for a half on Monday! Boo!

    • I don’t have shin splints, but I’m working on a post about the strengthening exercises my PT has me doing. I’ll have it up soon.
