Runners Etiquette & Lingo

If you know me, then chances are you found the title of this post a little comical.  You see, I am not politically correct or a people pleaser.  I do my best to keep the peace and don’t try to make waves, but I don’t stay awake at night worrying about offending people.  I do however have manners.  :)

I just thought of that episode in The Girls Next Door when Kendra hired an etiquette professional to help her.  It was hilarious!  Man, I miss that show.

Moving on, here are a couple things I learned over the years about running & racing etiquette.  I actually do follow.

  • Slower runners keep to the right.
  • Avoid sudden stops in the middle of the course.
  • Let faster runners pass.  Don’t hog the course, especially on tight trails.
  • Run facing traffic, but on the right side on trails.
  • Warn before passing someone.  I usually say something like to your left.
  • It’s only okay to say “ha ha I passed you sucka” in your head.  ;)

Runners lingo:

  • P.R Personal record
  • P.B Personal best
  • Chicked: When a dude get’s passed by a chick.
  • Splits and/or split times: The time it takes you to complete each individual mile.
  • DOMS: Delayed onset muscle soreness.  I get this a lot a day or 2 after a long run.
  •

Check out this list for more a lot more.  I found myself nodding at the screen more than a few times.

Any other runners etiquette and/or lingo to add?

    Are you politically correct?

Heck no, I’m pretty easy going.  It’s takes a lot to offend me.

    1. Oh my gosh I totally laughed out loud about only saying “I passed you sucka” in your head. Bahahaha! So funny.

And totally random, but my sister used to do Kendra’s hair on the Girl’s Next Door. I know that has nothing to do with running, but I had to share that. That is about as close to celebrity as I will ever get!

Oh man! I wish everyone would follow those simple etiquette rules! I hate having to expend so much extra energy because a band of slow runners won’t let me pass.

    3. I loved the original girls next door! i think i still have 3 seasons on DVD. unless the husband sold them at the garage sale.. . .

People really need to learn runner’s etiquette or at least use common sense. Really. Thinking that taking up an ENTIRE trail by walk 5 people wide wouldn’t be a problem?? Grrr. argh. -face palm-

    4. Okay, I might be a moron, but I don’t understand the difference between a personal record and personal best. I always say PR but lately I’m seeing PB pop up everywhere. Are they one in the same?
