Scents that take you back

Good morning!  I hope you are having a wonderful, sunshiny week.

Yesterday the sun came out, so naturally Bam & I had to soak it all in.  It doesn’t come out as much as we’re used to so we enjoy it when it does.

I did actually do a little work too.  I love planning and organization but the move cramped my style a bit, so I’m playing catch up.  Thank you so much for hanging in there with me during the transition.  Smile

Bam & I decided to check out the fruit trees in the 2nd backyard.  Okay well one of us only cared about hunting for gerbils and sniffing cactus.  We have an acre to explore so there are lot’s of adventures to be had.

I saw several fruit trees: oranges, lemons, apricots, apples, tangerines & nectarines.

I’m not sure what these little guys are.  Figs?  Does anyone know?

And these too?  Apples or pears?

Then I decided to hit up the grocery store for dinner, Nob Hill which we call snob hill since we are 4.

I took the back roads through wide open spaces and farmland with big beautiful mountains in the background.  I’ll never forget that drive today.  I felt so free…free as I’ll ever be…

I had the top down to take it all in.  My hair blowing in the wind, not a care in the world for the first time in a very loooong time.

I caught a whiff of peppers that instantly took me back to my grandma’s old house that was torn down years ago.  I practically grew up there and spent countless hours playing in her yard.  I can’t believe it was the same exact scent I remembered as a kid from her house.  Part of me misses those days, even when I was board.

Be still my country loving heart.

Gosh now I miss home and grandma even more.  It’s a good thing we live even closer now.

I am also digging these coastal trees.  I love how they grow in the direction the wind blows.

What scent(s) remind you of something or someone?

City, country, coastal, mountains-pick one!

A nice warm, sunny beach.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home?

  1. It’s a fig tree! I love the smell of tomato plants – takes me back immediately!

  2. One of my professors in college said to keep a box of crayons in your car and to smell them when you are stressed in traffic. Apparently the smell is supposed to bring you back to childhood memories and calm you. I’ve yet to try it, so not sure it works for me but worth a try.

  3. Did i catch on to some country song references there? Dixie Chicks and ZBB???? If im ever in Cali, we HAVE to meet up. We would be bfffffffffs. Not to be creepy.

I’m definitly a country girl. Right now I’m living in the “city” which actually isnt a city, but the downtown of a small town. My husband can’t take it anymore so we’re house hunting in the country 🙂

Fresh cut grass always reminds me of when I was little, playing in the yard. The good days!

  4. I love the smell of Cinnamon Rolls or Turkey Casserole….both remind me of my parents house.

    I’ll pick a pretty beach….east coast style!

First thing I do when I come home is kick off my shoes and take a shower! (Usually cuz I hit the gym after work and I don’t want to be a sweat monster around my house!)

  5. Smells definitely take you back. When I smell hay, I think of all the good times we had with our horses when I was growing up. The smell of leather reminds me of cleaning our saddles or boots before horse shows. The amazing smell of homemade bread (and cinnamon bread) makes me think of my mom cooking her delicious rolls.and cinnamon bread.

I’m a country girl, but I love some good sunny beach time every once in a while (more if I could)!

I work at home, but when my husband and I go somewhere and get back home, I usually unpack and then change into comfy clothes.

  6. Definitely a fig tree. Totally want one. The other tree looks to be an apple, though I can’t be sure.

Coastal. I love the smell of the ocean with the mountains at my back. Hello Santa Cruz 🙂

Sometimes I get strange whiff of my Wela’s perfume. Elizabeth Taylor’s white diamonds. I remember smelling it when I was little and now that she’s gone, the smell brings back so many great memories.

  7. I love free-feeling moments! The smell just before it rains and of fresh cut grass makes me think of being a kid playing outside during the summer. I’ll take the mountains, please! As soon as I get home I grab a quick 2-bite snack and take my dog out.

  8. Burberry cologne reminds me of a high school boyfriend, and why I HATE when guys overdo it on the smell-goods, haha.
I think I’d choose mountains, and big stretches of land with nothing but trees in my view. That would be quite lovely.
The first thing I do when I get home is talk in a baby voice to my dogs. I then proceed to pet them, give them cookies, and take them out to do their business. I love having them to come home to 🙂

  9. First thing I do when I get home is throw on my sweats! Gotta be comfy!

The smell of baking apple pie always reminds of my mom. She was the best baker.

  10. My grandpa used to smoke Tipperello Cigars (little tiny super cheap cigars) and although it was a yucky habit whenever I smell cigars I think of him.

Is it possible to have costal country mountains? I love the beach but I grew up in the country/mountains and I love them all.

When I get home I kiss my min-pin and then put on sweats!

  11. Great pics! I can’t believe you have all of those fruit trees in your backyard. 🙂

I love how scents totally catch you off guard every now and again. It’s amazing how it can cause your brain to trigger memories of long ago!
