Bucket list check: Big Sur

We are a house in mourning.  The Niners lost and I have a pounding headache.  I’m not sure if they are connected, or if it was that half of a glass of wine {I ‘m a cheap date, but I put out} it’s been a long morning over here filled with Advil and lots of coffee.

For the record, this cheese head was only cheering for the Niners so I wouldn’t have to deal with my husband.  How did that work out for me?!

Good thing we have a really fun afternoon planned to help soothe our pain.

Let’s rewind a bit to Saturday.  With the awesome weather holding out, hello sunny & 72,  we dropped the top and drove down the 1 to Big Sur.  There are not many words I can say that do this drive justice lets just say that I highly recommend this drive.  It needs to be on everyone’s bucket list as it will blow your mind.

We stopped a couple times to take it all in and snap some pics.  I could have happily stayed there all day and watch the waves come in and every now & then see whales spouting out water in the distance.  That was really cool to watch!

Can you spy the little cave below?

I climbed down the cliff a bit to check it out.

This picture is to freak my little grandma out.  Hehe.  Winking smile

Oh and the Bixby Bridge!!  I’ve seen several pictures of it, including one in Runners World magazine a few years ago and was amazed at it’s beauty.  I never thought we’d live close to this and honestly, I never imagined we’d make the drive to Big Sur.  I’m so happy we did because it’s incredible in person.  I didn’t know that this was only 45 minutes from home. I feel so blessed to have all this beauty so close to where we live.

Anyone run the Big Sur Marathon?  It must be quite the experience to run across this bridge.

I know the world is shocked that we found the only coffee shop in Big Sur, the Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant.  Which totally rocked!  Mike had a vanilla Americano & I had plain ole decaf drip coffee.

Then we wandered around the property.  It was eclectic with a backwoods, rustic feel to it if that makes any sense.

We didn’t spend much time there, it was more about the scenic drive for us.  But next time we plan to have a meal & explore around some more.

We came home to let Bam out and headed to a local restaurant for dinner.  It wasn’t  open yet, but they poured us a glass of wine and talked about our beautiful day as we watched the sunset.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day.  Until Mike raised his glass for a toast, and I looked at him and said um honey, I have the same wine you have.

Yah, I really am that blonde sometimes.

Have you ever been to Big Sur?

What drive is on your bucket list?

We never plan our drives, they just kinda happen.

What is one place you would love to see?

  1. Big sur is definitely on my bucket list (I’m thinking Big Sur marathon so I can get the sights that way! and then in the car too!).

Awesome pictures, looks like you had a great time. I love that you are always taking drives and seeing places, great way to get time together!

  2. We never plan our drives either- those are the best ones!

In the pic where you are overlooking the cliff, it totally looks like there is something out there in the water 🙂

    Beautiful pics!

  3. I would love to see where you live! It just looks so so beautiful!

Glad you all had a great weekend – That wine is making me crave wine at 2:00 in the afternoon. That is probably not a good idea 🙂

  4. Yesterday was a bummer over here too – my Patriots lost 🙁 sad day! BUT Big Sur is beautiful! My family and I did that drive a few summers ago – it is crazy beautiful and I’m so glad that I wasn’t the one driving so that I could just gaze at the beauty the whole time!

  5. The boys were so sad after the game. I was disappointed to, more for the guys being so bummed but still is was a tough loss and such a one sided officiated game. Ugh. I’m sure your Mike and my Eric would talk each other’s ears off about it. haha.

I’ve drive the drive to and through Big Sur twice. It’s such a beautiful highway. The coastline is spectacular around every turn. I totally have the Big Sur Marathon on my bucket list. Someday I’ll run it! Well, run/walk/hike drag my body up and down them hills until the finish line. haha.

And now I want wine with my sunset :p

    Hope you feel better!

  6. Gorgeous! You are clearly proving your point that I need to explore a little and make a trip to California.

  7. If you haven’t heard it, listen to “Bixby Canyon Bridge” by death cab for cutie. It’s a beautiful and powerful song and every time i hear it i’ve wanted to visit the bridge. Love your photos! I hope to one day end up on the Best Coast <3

  8. The Big Sur is seriously mind blowingly beautiful. So much so, that even my 14-year-old mind was blown away by it, and it took a lot to impress me then (that was the first time I had traveled to CA and now I live here). This state has so much amazing beauty, it’s what keeps me here even though I long for simpler ways of living a lot and less keeping up with the Joneses. Even just driving up 280 to SF is amazing and is a good reminder what a gorgeous state we live in.
