Since I am a highly trained professional at not doing my fur, I thought I’d do a post about it.  You should all take my advanced technological advise.

Or not.

I had a couple questions about what hair products I use.  I’m a cheap-o and would go broke buying expensive shampoo + conditioner for my uber long hair.  I do think the sulfate free stuff really does help retain color so I roll with L’Oreal EverCreme Intense Nourishing.  I’ve tried their other lines and prefer the ones below.  They are the most moisturizing and smell like vanilla coconut deliciousness.

99% of the time I wash + condition every night.  Otherwise it turns into a greasy mess that I am not down with.  Plus I’m the weirdo that loves going to bed with wet hair.  Every hairstylist I’ve ever been to advises against washing daily, then compliments me on how healthy it is considering my highlight + lowlight addiction.  I say do what you want, it’s your fur.

This Organix Macadamia dry hair oil is magic.  I swear by it.  I use about a quarter size amount from the ears down after I run a brush though it every evening.  After it dries, the oil takes away the frizz and leaves it shiny in a healthy, non greasy looking way.  It smells delicious – sweet & clean.  If you haven’t guessed, I have a thing for scents.  Don’t even get me started on candles.

I haven’t found an inexpensive deep conditioner that works.  This one lied to me.  So if you have one you love, please tell me about it.

Another really cool thing about running is sometimes I put my hair in a pony & braid.  After a quick shower, I undo everything, run my fingers through, finish with some hairspray & it looks like this.

Not perfect, but at least it’s acceptable to go out into the world, in the book of Jacqueline.

When I actually do it, I use this Hot Tools 3/4 inch curling iron and this Infrashine flat iron.  I’m gonna get all nerdy and tell you I’ve had that flat iron since 2005 and LOVE it.

My other addiction are BIC Bands, but I’m sure you already knew that.  I wear them 98.98847698% of my life.  Bam was not impressed with my collection, but whatev.  He chews his butt so his opinion can’t be taken seriously.

I had a request on how I wear my fur while running and there are a couple ways depending on how I’m feeling.  I usually go with the high messy bun.  It’s quick + easy.  {TWSS}  I put the BIC Band on first then pull my hair into a high pony.

Don’t pull it all the way though on the last twist of the hair tie.  Then gather it into a messy bun and put another hair tie in to secure it.

Other times I’ll just run with a high pony and for races, I tend to braid it.

You can consider me your BIC Band dealer, because from now until Sunday they are offering SCB readers free first class shipping on all US orders of $12 or more with coupon code SCship.

For those who expressed interest in the chevron band I’m rocking below, it’s this one.

How often do you wash your fur?

How do you wear your hair while running or working out?

What shampoo + conditioner do you use?

  1. I have to wash my hair daily. I must sweat a lot while sleeping, because when I get up in the am- my hair is a greasy mess. I am cheap as well and I use Suave shampoos. They actually have a good PH balance for being an inexpensive product. I have tried expensive shampoos and I honestly can’t tell a difference. I wear my hair in a ponytail- although now it’s getting longer, I find I have to do a low ponytail or a messy bun type of pony otherwise it’s bouncing around and coming undone!

  2. I just use whatever shampoo is on sale because Im cool like that but I really should find a nice shiny hair oil and a deep conditioner. I also want a curling iron so I can do cool dude curls like that but I’m also challenged in the hair doing dept so fancy is usually just straight not airdried for me.

  3. I usually wash it every other day unless I have a super sweaty workout session. Then I need to wash it ASAP or I’ll be an oily mess. I use Kenra shampoo & conditioner. It’s expensive, but it’s one of the only hair brands I swear by. Shampoo, Conditioner, volumizing spray, hairspray, etc….it’s all good! And I have long hair too, but it will all last me a few months.

    • I’ve heard really good things about the Kenra line, especially the hairspray. Have you tried their deep conditioner? If so, thoughts?

  4. I was twice a week. Maybe once is all. If need be, I use a little dry shampoo but washing less is better for your locks. I lvoe to just run coconut oil through the bottom half and let it air dry. As far as shampoo/conditioner I like the sulfate free stuff and I also love Bed Head Resurrection when I need a conditioning boost!

  5. I “wash” my hair with conditioner only every three days. Shampoo is too drying. I use ABBA right now, but Kevin Murphy is my favorite.
I do the same messy bun and a BicBand while running. I can’t stand to have hair touch my face, back or shoulders when I’m sweating.

  6. Love me some Bic Bands! I wash every other day if it is straight, and every 3rd or 4th when it is curly. Because I don’t brush it when it is curly, I usually can only go 3 days without washing before dred locks start to form. Which is kind of disgusting-feeling and drives me crazy.

  7. I used to wash my hair every day. I couldn’t get over the whole working out and then not washing it thing. Then I went backpacking around Europe for a month in January and learned that wet hair in freezing temps was a no no. I used dry shampoo a lot (washing every other day) and discovered how much healthier my hair felt and looked. So I continue to do that, washing my hair roughly every other day.

  8. One amazing, thoroughly effective shampoo and conditioner that deeply moisturize your hair are the ones from pro naturals. They also have a hair repar mask that totally strenghthens your hair and moisturizes it completely. check it out, it’s really good.

  9. Okay, so I was using the same Loreal shampoo and conditioner for quite a while and thought I was happy with it, but I started to notice my hair was very BLAH all the time. Less body, shine, etc… My hair is similar to yours, except not quite as long or thick (lucky!). Anyway, I bit the bullet and ‘invested’ in Pureology, and I have to say within just a couple weeks I noticed a big difference. I think I was secretly hoping I wouldn’t so I could save the moolah! Since I can get away with only washing my hair 3-4 times per week, I guess it’s not so bad overall. I told my husband not to touch it! LOL Thanks for all the tips…I can’t wait to try your bun trick for a run. Oh, and I love BIC bands! I usually pick them up at race expos. 🙂

  10. Ooh ooh thank you for doing this :D.
I have to wash my hair every day since I run or workout and I get to sweaty.
I wear a pony tail but lately with all the sweat and either rain or wind my hair feels like it’s everywhere on my face.
I use Head& shoulders green apple, I don’t know why if I use something different I get dandruff right away so I’m stuck using that.
Thank you so much for the BIC bands :D, I just ordered the Chevron one and an orange reflective one, I can’t wait to try them.
