Trader Joe’s favorites + 1 not so much

Have you ever started your morning routine off out of order?  Normally I get up, let Bam outside, eat a banana, make toast + coffee, let Bam back inside and sit down to blog.  After I write a post, I either go for a run or start laundry, etc.

Today I did things all out of order and the Type A in me is struggling a bit.  Am I the only weirdo who feels at a loss when things are out of routine?

Anyhoo end of rant, let’s talk about my favorite foods from Trader Joe’s shall we.

I typically buy about 90% of our food from TJ’s.  I’ve tried a lot of stuff, most delicious, some not.  Since I recently tried a few new to me items, I thought I’d share them with you.

First, my current favorite, Country Potatoes with haricots verts & wild mushrooms found in the frozen section.  Lu picked these out when she was here over Christmas vacation, but we never got around to trying them.  Turns out girlfren knows her food.  Unlike me, they are versatile – great for a side dish, add chicken + feta for a meal or whatever else you can think of.  Major bonus points they cook in 7-8 minutes which is perfect for my short attention span in the kitchen.

I also love the garlic potatoes with parmesan sauce.  Same as above.

Mike + I love the frozen Melange a Trios – frozen peppers.  I think they are $1.99 and are always ready to go.  We use them in soups and other cool stuff the boy cooks.

I am not a huge fan of crackers, I never really have been, but these Pita Bite Crackers rock!  I eat them with TJ’s fresh Bruschetta {found in the salad section} and hummus.

Speaking of hummus, their regular brand is delicious.  Another notable favorite is the cilantro-jalapeno hummus dip.  If you’re into those flavors.

Favorite jar of red sauce goes to TJ’s Arrabiata sauce.  I love marinara sauce and have tried just about every jar from the store I could find.  This one rocks my face off.  I don’t feel the need to add a little something to it to make it good.  I also dig Giada’s roasted garlic marinara sauce from Target.

Honorable mentions:

Salt + Vinegar chips, feta, Omega 3 eggs + 3 cheese ravioli in the dry pasta section.  If you’re into sushi, we love the spicy sushi rolls.

One thing I do not like is the green olive tapenade.  The label was everything I love, but when I took a bite all I tasted was the dreaded rosemary.  Noooooooooo they did not warn me about that.  The label said “spices.”  I want my 4 bucks back!!

What are your TJ’s favs?

Are you a picky eater?

Yep.  I’m pretty plain I eat like a kid most of the time.

What are spices you despise?

I’m not a huge fan of a lot of spices, but I do not like rosemary & ginger.  I do love cilantro and anything smoky.

  1. I am a huge TJ’s fan! Ours is at least 1/2 hr away..the only one in Utah is downtown and with traffic and everything I rarely go. Last time I went I got some frozen burritos for my husband to take to work. They were in a 2 pack and chili verde filled. He LOVED them!
I like that they have lots of organic selections and great prices. And supposedly all of their products are non-GMO.

    • I feel ya, when I lived back home the closest one was 45 minutes just one way, so I didn’t go as often.
I dig those chili verde burritos too. I like to keep at least one package on hand just in case.

  2. It’s hard to say what is my favorite from Trader Joe’s, but I do love the goat cheese cheddar 🙂 the husband doesn’t though. Those pita crackers are a favorite. We enjoy the edaname as well. Though i LOVE the dark chocolate powerberries. I’m always hunting for them. The Vodka sauce from TJ’s is good too. I haven’t tried the sauce above.

I can be picky. I don’t like overly spicy/hot foods. I like minimal kick and that’s it. So no jalapenos or siracha for me. I like herbs and spices though. can’t get enough of cinnamon or cumin.

    • Ooh the vodka sauce is probably the only one from TJ’s I haven’t tried. I’ll have to pick up a jar next time.
And yes on the cumin, especially in tacos & chili.

  3. My TJs faves are basically everything. In my cart every time are eggs, almond milk, multigrain english muffins, This ___ walks into a bar, fruits & veggies, and frozen breakfast burritos for when Im in a hurry. And coffeeeee.

    • Oh yeah This __ walks into a bar’s are my jam!! Love the seasonal cranberry ones. Our grocery haul almost looks the same, except the breakfast burritos. I need to try those.

  4. Somebody tell me the best Trader Joe’s whole bean coffee! My favorites are the veggie packs (brocc, cauliflower, carrots). I think I buy out the whole store. And their honey crisp apples cuz they’re HUUUUUUGE. And their chunky unsalted peanut butter (red label). And, I could go on because so many things are a deal there but I’ll stop (like bananas, sparkling water, almond milk, eggs, etc.)

    • I can’t help you out on the coffee because I pretty much love all coffee + don’t discriminate. 😉 I have to add their bananas are seriously the best. I don’t know where they come from or what they put in them.
If you’re a fan of mango, their dried just mango’s are out of this world awesome.

  5. nice grocery haul! I want to go try that red sauce now – my fiance comes from a very Italian family that makes their own sauce, so it’s hard to find a store bought red sauce that is up to par!

I’m not really a picky eater – but I do eat like a little kid a lot…PBJ is still probably my most favorite food EVER.

  6. Ok this is too funny…..I just got home from Tjs. HA!!!!! My Ultimate Favorite is the Triple Ginger Snap Cookies. I am a sucker for Ginger Snaps and theirs are the BEST. Crunchy with pieces of crystallized Ginger in them YUMMY. I like the Chicken Taquitos and I always buy the big bag of frozen Green Beans (today they were on sale for $1.69) SCORE!!!!! My son LOVES popcorn so today I bought him a bag of the Herb and Spice Popcorn as a treat. He will be so excited. HUMMUS yes theirs is so good. I also like their Tomato & Basil Marinara sauce. YUMMY!!! Great now I’m hungry 🙂

    • Is it weird that I love ginger snaps but despise ginger? Yah, don’t answer that.
We love the frozen green beans too. So easy to toss into a soup or side dish. You’ll have to let me know if the popcorn is a winner.

  7. You have to try their Medditerranean Hummus. It is amazing and I don’t really like hummus.

    • I’ve always wanted to try it, but I’m afraid “spices” on the ingredient list might include rosemary. If you say no, I will def try it!

  8. I think Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs – right there with cilantro and basil!!!
And, I tend to do things in the same order every day, too – weekends are a little off and always through me a bit!

    • Ha! Mike loves rosemary + basil too. Isn’t it weird how we can become creatures of habit? Maybe I should work on switching things up every now + then. You know, live a little. 😉 Have a great evening.

  9. I need to try out that red sauce! I feel like I always add spices or garlic to canned ones so it would be nice to not have to for once! And I agree with you on the rosemary front. Not a fan.

  10. I lOVE their kalamata olive hummus, 21 seasoning salute, and rosemary marcona almonds. I wouldn’t call myself a ‘picky’ eater (some may disagree), more of a selective eater. As for spices, I don’t like cilantro (it taste like soap to me) and am not a huge fan of dll (though I looooove pickles) or cumin. My favs are basil and oregano-it’s the Italian in me =)

  11. All of those items look soooo good! Unfortuneately, I am not a picky eater and will eat anything lol. I love Trader Joes, but there are none close to us. I have only been to 1 and it was in Chicago.

  12. I LOVE TJ’s Beef and Broccoli and Orange Chicken (both found in the frozen food). But, since they aren’t exactly health, we only by them occasionally as a treat. Staples for me include wasabi peas, chia seeds, the Salmon Jerky (Oh, I love it so much!), and the Marinated Soy Ginger Cod Fillets (SO GOOD!).
