Random thoughts + I signed up for a race!

  • I’ve been feeling out of sorts lately, now going on day 3 with a tension headache (self diagnosis) which has me feeling blah, tired and severely lacking concentration which is why this post is all in bullet points, littered with typos. And longest run on sentences in the history of ever.
  • After I hit publish, I am going for a run to catch some fresh air and hopefully snap out of this funk.

  • I got to talk to my grandma last night which is always so nice. I ‘see’ her every day on Facebook, {yes my 86 year old grandma is on FB!} but nothing beats a phone call to hear about stuff going on back home. Oh and she still has her tomato plants, in case y’all were wondering. Winking smile

  • I’m having an athletic identity crisis. I love pool running, running on land and cycling so much I don’t even know what I am anymore. Runner? Cyclist? How about both! So I did a very logical thing and signed up for the Mermaid Duathlon in Capitola!

The perfect little beach town plus the race ends on the beach just steps away from a free ice bath in the ocean right after crossing the finish line.

Yes, this is part of the run course!

New things for 2014:

  • New bike course: predominantly flat, more roads with bike lanes, one gradual climb that brings participants into the coastal redwoods. I, SCB promise not to get lost this time.
  • Sprint Tri & Du will do one loop, Mighty Mermaid will do two loops.
  • Price increases on September 1st.

Anyone want to race (I am using the r word with a great deal of caution) with me or meet up for coffee after? If so, use coupon code SKINNYCHICK10 for 10% off entry fee and shoot me an email skinnychickblog @ gmail dot com.

  • It’s Concourse d’Elegance week and I can already tell it is going to be one of my new favorite weeks of the year. Love me some fast cars and freedom. This is my new car for going to Starbucks and Trader Joe’s. I just can’t find the trunk.

What is your next race? What distance is it?

Any tri or du friends out there? Please leave your best training/race day tips.

What’s your favorite week out of the year? Why?

  1. Hi!i love ur blog! U make me laugh! Sorry u r having a blah day! U r always so upbeat don’t “beat”urself up about it! Ur body may be telling u to take a day off! My next haha “first” race is at the end if the month! 5K! Probably come in last but it’s for a good cause! Hoping I love it and want to do more

  2. I hope the fresh air helped pull you out of your funk. How freaking adorable is your grandma?!? Oh my, I love her and have never met her.

Girl, yes, I am going through the crisis, too. Always was “a runner”. Now, I am calling myself a balanced athlete as I have been consistent with 2 swims/pool runs, 2 bike rides, 2 walk/runs per week PLUS as much weights and yoga as I can fit in (usually 2-3 each per week). I struggled with it at first, letting go of the “just running”….but now I feel really good about it. I feel balanced and healthy. When my run/walk challenges my body and makes it feel creaky (Monday), I know I have my swim/pool run the next day to work all that junk out and feel awesome!! In addition, I went out on a big limb and signed up for a week long yoga retreat in Tulum for next February. It will be yoga 2x per day. Knowing I am doing this keeps me motivated to totally keep my training full body and balanced. Reminds me that running alone will not help me achieve my goals.

I just want to be healthy, non achy, loving my workouts and not injured. And I want to be able to do this day in and day out for years to come. I think (for me) the only way this will happen is if I keep my “feet on the pavement time” to 2-3 days per week.

    Sorry for the novel.
    Hugs to you, J.

  3. So glad you are running and racing again!!
My next race is September 11 (a Thursday) – it is an ultra – 9 hours 11 minutes and I can’t wait!

  4. Dayuuuum… late to the party today. Stupid work. Ummm this weekend, I’m running AFC in SD. Then ventura…

I’ve done 2 sprint tri…one of them a reverse. Hardest part admittedly was the swim…ass and feet, ass and feet…all up in my face. (please let the cowboy read that one…). Some people actually grabbed my legs to use as support. Lame.

Favorite week? whoa, that’s a tough one. I guess it would be the the 3rd week in july. That’s always been for our family the vacation week for the last 16 years.

    later J!

  5. My next race is a 4 miler in the beginning of September for Autism Speaks…and then 29ish miles total for Ragnar Napa (we’re doing it Ultra with one van instead of 2)

I just did my first tri and i doggie-paddled the 300 yard swim. I have no tips. LOL. Well I did get tips about making transition areas easy peasy. Take 2 small hand towels and lay them on either side of your bike. lay out all your needed gear separately (bike stuff on left and run stuff on right if doing a tri with swim first). It helps to mark off your personal space too so when athletes return to transition they don’t take over your space.

My favorite week is the week of my birthday (Oct 25). I get excited for all the fall traditions here in the north east. The leaves change colors, the houses are all decorated for Halloween and I go apple picking and make pie and cider. And I try to plan a long weekend down in Cape May (Jersey Shore) that weekend as well. Of course last time Hurricane Sandy hit. And this year the rental property was booked.

  6. Woohoo! I’ve only done one duathlon before but loved it!! I used the first run as my warm up, then pushed on the bike and then pushed the second run. I didn’t want to run too hard the first time and not make it through the rest. Will you use your bike shoes or get cages for your bike? I would practice transitions if you are concerned about time, but otherwise just kick butt and have fun!
