Rebuilding confidence after surgery or injury

Yesterday morning I hit up the gym for an aqua aerobics class. It was the shallow water class which is always fun. We used pool noodles to cycle in the pool. Supa fun! I think my favorite is the deep water class. We use buoyancy cuffs around the ankles which takes some core work to keep the body upright in the pool. Sometimes we pool run with them which is challenging and so fun!

The workout is fantastic for joint mobility and a lot of stretching which I didn’t expect, but feels amazing. If you are recovering from an injury or just need to take it easy, maybe consider an aqua class.

Yesterday afternoon a friend spontaneously asked if I wanted to go for a ride. Oh heck yes!! I was a bit nervous because I haven’t been on my bike outside post op, but decided to go for it. It was more of a lack of confidence than anything else. Falling off a bike would likely be detrimental to my hip surgery but lets try not to think about that. So I dusted it off (literally) and headed to the trail under one condition: I refuse to climb a hill I can’t ride down. So we had a deal.

Where we ride…

There were hills, flat parts, slow inclines, steep inclines (at least for this beginner) that really challenged us. I had to walk my bike up 3 times but overall I felt pretty dang strong all things considered.

I can’t say the ride did the punk ass sesamoids any favors and it left us feeling like there is a lot of work to do, but we are stoked to take on that challenge. The sesamoids need to straighten up and act right.

You have no idea how much I needed that confidence boost. Heck, I had no idea I needed it that much either. We have 15 miles in the books!

1 sidenote: There are lots of squirrels everywhere on these beach trails. My buddy told me if I hit one, just keep my wheel straight, that way I don’t land on my hip. By the way, if you wanna see what happens, google image search, squirrel bike accident. Poor little fellas were never the same.

Oh and just in case you were wondering if Bam lost his watch….

The time change threw him off a little, but somehow he figured it out.

How do you build confidence when training?

Does anyone else take an aqua aerobics class? Or swim/pool run etc?

What new to you fitness class would you like to try?

Aqua yoga in the hot pool. Oh yeah!

  1. I have been going to a yoga class 1 or 2 times a week for The last few weeks. I’m finally starting to like yoga. I have tried multiple times in my life and it wasn’t ever a good fit for me. I think I found an instructor and a style that I really enjoy. I feel so good and bendy when I’m done!
Aqua yoga would be super cool!

  2. I build confidence with consistency. The more I do it, the more confident I become. I’ve never done an aqua class but I think it would be fun. I’d like to try tabata but I’ve been feeling kind of fatigued (mostly mental and just frustrated with running injuries) lately and I’m taking a little break from the gym.

  3. Very nice job on the bike ride! Amazing!
Yes, I swim 1-2 x per week. Love the intensity of the workout w/ no pounding on my body.
    Water truly is healing…
